ColdCaseDVDs.com

. . . a web site dedicated to getting Cold Case onto DVDs.

Welcome to ColdCaseDVDs.com!

As you may already know, the television series Cold Case is not available on home video.

The story most people hear is that ‘music licensing issues’ are stopping the DVDs from being produced. According to these reports on the Internet, some of the songs used in the show have been licensed only for television broadcast and not for home video. For the studios to use the music in DVDs, they must pay ‘hefty’ royalties to the musicians and record companies. These additional fees are so incredibly high—some of these stories say—that the studios won’t be able to sell the DVDs at any reasonable price.

It seems that this is only partially true.

The story appears to have two origins in mid-2005 after the end of Season Two. One source is from a chat between a Cold Case fan and an executive from Warner Brothers. The other source was from a reply by “InsideR”—a studio inside source—on the Look Again message board.

Recently in 2006, Look Again board member JazzyB asked InsideR again how to get legitimate Cold Case DVDs, and our situation seems to have improved:

Mar 7, 2006, 7:33pm, JazzyB wrote:

Since the DVD release of ‘Cold Case’ may never see the light of day, how would the enterprising fan acquire a copy of edits, re-shot scenes, etc.? Legally, of course.

The response from InsideR on Mar 15, 2006 was:

The best things the fans can do is to write and email Warners and CBS begging them to release the DVD. If they think they'll sell enough, they'll find a way to solve the licensed music problems.

Same goes for a soundtrack album.
—R

Folks, isn’t it about time we show Warner Brothers, CBS, and Bruckheimer Films that a lot of viewers are interested in purchasing Cold Case DVDs? And a soundtrack album too, while they’re at it? That’s what this web site is all about.

WHAT WE’RE DOING

This is a fan-based effort to let the studio executives know that a lot of people want to buy Cold Case DVDs, and that we would love to purchase a soundtrack CD too. Hopefully, by showing them our huge numbers, they will realize that it’s worth their effort to solve the music licensing problems. We will do this through the time-proven method of a postcard campaign.

What Is A Postcard Campaign, And How Effective Is It?

A postcard campaign is an effort that television fans use to let network and studio executives know how important something is to them. By mailing postcards, fans have been able to influence decisions made by studio executives, such as the decision to renew a television series for another season. You can read the FAQ section for a short history and a few examples of such campaigns.

How To Participate

All you need to do is to send four postcards that say you’re interested in Cold Case DVDs and a soundtrack CD, and just two more if you’d like to see Kathryn Morris host Saturday Night Live.

WRITING A POSTCARD REQUESTING DVDs
AND A SOUNDTRACK CD

The postcards must contain the following information:

  1. NAME – Your full name is optional. At the minimum, please include your first name or the nickname you use on internet message boards.
  2. AGE
  3. GENDER
  4. CITY and STATE (if in the U. S.), CITY and PROVINCE (if in Canada), or CITY and COUNTRY (if outside the U.S.)
This information is valuable for their marketing efforts, as well as to let them know which countries and languages the videos should be produced for. Your full return address is preferred, but still optional. If you decide to omit a return address, be extra careful that you place adequate postage on your postcards.
  5. The SEASON you first began watching Cold Case.

The demographic information you provide is very useful to the studios in making their decision, so the more data you make available, the better it is for them and our efforts.

You may also include the following information:

  • If you are planning to buy more than one DVD set, then mention the number of additional sets you want to purchase and why.
  • If you have the ability to influence others to buy Cold Case DVDs and/or soundtrack CDs, please mention this also. For example, you work at a music store or you make purchasing decisions for a retailer.
  • If you intend to use the DVDs for something other than personal enjoyment, then describe how you intend to use them. For example, you plan to use them in a classroom or for a youth group.
  • If you have any serious plans to purchase an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray DVD player (such as the one built into the upcoming Sony Playstation 3), then mention your interest in obtaining discs in these newer formats.
  • If you are not fluent in English, then mention your need to have DVDs translated and/or captioned into your native language.

You do not need to include the following information, because they can be discussed on the forums at this site and at the various message boards across the internet:

  • Special features on the DVD
  • Songs you would like to see on a Cold Case Soundtrack CD
  • Your desire to hear the original music (and not substituted songs) on the DVD version of each episode.

Sample DVD and Soundtrack CD Request Postcard

A postcard message may go something like this:

Dear <Recipient>,

Hello, I'm a 39 year-old man from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I'd like to see Cold Case released onto DVDs and a Cold Case soundtrack CD too. I began watching the show from mid-season three.

I run a youth center and plan to use the DVDs to teach my kids the dangers of using drugs. I also have a brother-in-law who is overseas, and I would love to send him Cold Case DVDs as a Christmas gift.

Thank you,
Joseph

Regarding Etiquette...

Keep in mind that these postcards are a form of business correspondence, and not a casual mailing. These postcards are meant to convince business executives to make a multi-million dollar decision to our favor. The postcard format we are using in this campaign is for their convenience, and not for ours. Please use a professional tone in your messages. See the F.A.Q. section for more information.

CAMPAIGN TO REQUEST KATHRYN MORRIS
TO APPEAR ON SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE

Saturday Night Live (SNL) is the U.S. comedy show that produced talents such as Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, Chris Rock, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and many others. Guest hosts for SNL come from a wide range of backgrounds, from movie actors, to musicians, athletes, fashion models, and even politicians. If you’d like to see Kathryn Morris become a guest host for SNL (and who doesn’t), then join our second campaign by simply sending two additional postcards.

The postcards should contain the following information:

  1. NAME
  2. AGE
  3. GENDER
  4. CITY and STATE (if in the U. S.), CITY and PROVINCE (if in Canada), or CITY and COUNTRY (if outside the U.S.)

This demographic information will be very useful to the executives at SNL in making their decision.

You may also include the following information:

  • If you don’t normally watch SNL, state that having Kathryn Morris as a guest host will convince you to tune into the show.
  • If you live outside of North America, please mention how you intend to view the show. Some may be able to receive the show via satellite television. Others may have no choice but to view selected video clips through SNL’s website at NBC.com. If this is the case, make sure you request that they post Kathryn Morris’ video clips into their video library.

Again, please write your letters professionally.

A sample message may go something like this:

Dear <Recipient>,

Hello, I'm a 39 year-old man from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am a huge Kathryn Morris fan and I would love to see her appear as a guest host. Although I am a casual viewer of your show, I would not miss an episode that Ms. Morris appears in.

Best regards,
Joseph

POSTCARDS

A good postcard to use may be ones that are printed for your specific city, state, or country you live in. There is also artwork in the “Downloads” section that allows you to print your own postcards using your home computer. Better yet, if you are artistically inclined, then create them yourself! Keep in mind that a postcard should be no larger than 6" wide by 4-1/2" tall, no smaller than 5" wide by 3-1/2" tall, and be constructed out of rigid cardstock paper. (See http://pe.usps.com/text/dmm100/what.htm)

WHAT TO DO BEFORE MAILING THE POSTCARDS?

Make sure you have the correct postage on your postcards! This is very important if you are mailing from outside the U.S., or if you are sending the cards without a return address!

WHAT DO WE DO AFTER MAILING THE POSTCARDS?

  1. Please do not email the individuals on this list or their businesses. It is rude to spam an email account with messages, and we do not want to interrupt their daily business with our requests. The postcards you send should be more than enough to accomplish our goals.
  2. Please register for this site, sign our Guestbook, vote in our Polls, and participate in our DVD and Soundtrack forums. Your registration here will help us measure how many people are participating in the campaign. This will also allow us to alert you with important information as it becomes available.
  3. Place your name on Amazon.com’s waiting list. Amazon keeps the studios informed about their customer’s interest in products. Even though the DVD and Soundtrack CD are currently unavailable, by putting your name on their list, they will email you when the video and music discs become available. Please follow this link: Amazon.com
  4. Please visit and join the many other message boards and forums that are participating in this effort! Many sites from around the world are listed on the Links page.
  5. Spread the word! Get in touch with other Cold Case fans and fans of guest actors as well, and convince them to send postcards!

Thank you for your efforts. May all our futures be filled with many seasons of Cold Case DVDs, several editions of soundtrack CDs, and Kathryn Morris every weekend on Saturday Night Live!
